Caroline finally found the right hallway after getting her bearings and she picked up the pace. The girls would be fussing at her for taking too long, but she had been preoccupied after leaving Betty and why did all the hallways have to look the same on a cruise ship anyway?

As she approached the cabin, she could hear their voices behind the door. She had no plans to eavesdrop but before she could get her key card out of her pocket, she heard Peggy.

“I’ll get her to understand that she has to move right now while it’s a seller’s market and she can get the best price. If she waits too long, the bubble is going to pop, and the house will go down in value.”

Caroline felt sick at her stomach, even though she wasn’t surprised. This was exactly what she’d feared the girls were up to.

“I brought some brochures from the senior living place that I liked best,” Laura said. “The one that has the best list of activities. The only issue is that she won’t be able to bring those cats.”

“Wait—we can’t make her get rid of Felix and Fauci. Dad loved those boys,” Rachel said.

Caroline wanted to cheer for Rachel. Maybe her youngest would be her ally.

“But maybe we can find them a home together,” Rachel added. “I know a girl who works in cat rescue. How old are they, anyway?”

So much for Rachel sticking up for her.

“We just need to get through today and at dinner tonight, we’ll talk about everything,” Peggy said. “From what I read, some of the best stops take quite a hike to see the good stuff. Like Black Sand Beach and the Seven Pools. Mom won’t be able to do those, so we’ll have to skip them. But maybe she’ll want to stay on board tomorrow and we can hit those.”

“Then why don’t we just do Front Street so we could shop while she sits on a bench or something?” Rachel said. “There’s an art gallery there I would love to see.”

“We’ve already planned the day so let’s stick to it. If she’d hurry up, that is. I want to be in the first group to disembark so we don’t get caught up behind the slow old folks,” Laura said.

Slow old folks?

Caroline couldn’t feel more disappointed in her daughters than she did at that moment. Not only for their callous depiction of old folks, but for their scheming behind her back. It wasn’t like she was senile or couldn’t think for herself. Heck, she wasn’t even that old yet!

What hurt the most is they weren’t the least bit excited about making memories with her on Maui. She was a hindrance to them, it appeared. A chain around their ankle.

She used her key card and went in.

“There you are,” Laura said. “What took so long?”

“Mom, you’re going to make us late for Richard,” Peggy said. She looked at Caroline as though she were a disobedient toddler.

Caroline sat down on the bed. “I had to stop at the bathroom.
